Jim, the director of the Sustainability Office at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), developed TRU’s first Strategic Sustainability Plan and is responsible implementing sustainability-related programs, policies and initiatives across campus. The comprehensive plan covers operation & Planning, Advocacy and Engagement, Learning and Governance and has 130 strategies with time bound Key Performance Indicators in order advance sustainability and reduce GHG emissions throughout every level of the organization. Jim has overseen a wide range of projects and initiatives to reduce energy, paper and waste by 30, 60 and 50 percent respectively. When Jim is not at TRU he is working as internationally certified Mountain Guide. He has led more than 20 international mountaineering expeditions to every corner of the earth. While venturing to places like Peru, Greenland, Antarctica and Iceland Jim sees firsthand how our decisions here can affect the social and environmental systems in other places.
